Joseph Pizzorno, ND is a transformational leader in medicine. Through half a century of work, he has helped establish and advance the academic, scientific, and clinical foundation of natural, functional, integrative, and environmental medicine. He has worked relentlessly to advance naturopathic medicine:

    1.    Co-founder and founding president of Bastyr University in 1978; coined the term “science-based natural medicine” and led Bastyr to become the first ever accredited institution in the field. 

    2.    Cofounded the American Association of Naturopathic Medicine

    3.    Cofounded the Council on Naturopathic Medical Education leading it to becoming an approved accreditation agency by the US Department of Education 

    4.    Coauthored with Michael Murray, ND the Textbook of Natural Medicine (over 100,000 copies in 4 languages across 5 editions) that. beginning in 1985, established the scientific foundation for modern naturopathic medicine

    5.    Coauthored with Walter Crinnion, ND Clinical Environmental Medicine which set the standard for the natural approach for addressing toxins from the environment.

    6.    Senior editor of the Foundations of Naturopathic Medicine textbook project and wrote several chapters

    7.    Member of the Board of Directors of the Institute for Natural Medicine

He has set worldwide standards of practice by authoring or co-authoring 6 textbooks for doctors and is Editor-in-Chief of PubMed-indexed IMCJ—the most widely read, peer-reviewed journal in the field (25,000 copies each issue). He is a founding member of the Board of Directors of the Institute for Functional Medicine, where he served 3 terms as Chair. 

A licensed naturopathic physician since 1975, midwife (past), educator, researcher, and expert spokesman, he is also author or co-author of 8 consumer books including the Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine (which sold 2 million copies in 6 languages) and most recent, Healthy Bones, Healthy You! with wife Lara. He founded SaluGenecists to develop artificial intelligence tools to help consumers and professionals improve healthcare outcomes.
